History
At St Joseph’s Junior School, we want to inspire children to think like historians, to work with evidence, argue for their own conclusions, and learn to distinguish between historical facts and the way people interpret them. Above all, by the time children leave in Year 6, children will be able to demonstrate they understand more about themselves as individuals, as members of society and the role they play in history. The history curriculum seeks to give pupils a solid foundation and broad overview in some of the most important periods, events and themes in local, national and world history. It is comprehensive but necessarily selective. The curriculum gives pupils a strong grounding in British history including the locality the children live in and how it has changed over time. Children are taught from the first settlements through Roman Britain, the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. Deliberately chosen concepts as well as intentional thought behind the substantive and disciplinary knowledge taught through the history curriculum allows for children to develop increasingly sophisticated schemata over time building upon their knowledge year on year.
